"Road trips" are becoming more popular, especially as the credit crunch continues to bite. More of us are taking to the roads for our Summer holidays in a bid to avoid expensive airfares. All you need is to pack, check your oil, tyres and water, and you are off! Of course, another upside to travelling this way too, is that you can stop more or less where you want to. If you see somewhere you like the look of, you can pull over, take some photos or stop for a bite to eat. And, if you are driving abroad in particular, you can experience different places and cultures en route to your destination, making the whole journey exciting and rich. However, one thing you must not overlook is that you have adequate car insurance.

No matter what sort of motor insurance you have, whether it is a standard car insurance policy; over 50s insurance; or one aimed at lady drivers - it is imperative that you check your cover before you hit the road.

· When is your motor insurance up for renewal? If it expires while you are away, ensure that you arrange new cover from the time that your old one expires;

· If you are driving in the UK, then your car insurance should normally cover you for your trip. However, check with your insurer, just in case;

· If you are driving abroad, check that your insurance includes European driving cover. Many insurers will ask that you advise them prior to you driving abroad, so make sure you tell them. There may also be a limit within your car insurance as to how many days you are covered to drive abroad under your policy.

Once your motor insurance is sorted, don't forget to take all of your relevant documents, such as a valid driving licence; your car insurance etc. And you may also need an international driving permit if you are visiting one of the countries that requires this documentation.

Don't forget your car breakdown insurance, too, so you don't get left in the lurch!

So, if your next break is a motoring holiday, making sure you have the right over 50s insurance or standard car insurance will give you the peace of mind that you are properly protected, leaving you free to enjoy the sights and sounds of your journey!
